Celebrating Milestones in Recovery
Having been in addiction recovery, it is important throughout your recovery journey to celebrate your milestones and achievements. Achieving these milestones is a way of making it clear to yourself and others that you have chosen a better life and that you are working hard to achieve and maintain that.
It can be incredibly difficult coming out of rehab and adapting to life with old habits and temptations all around you, but it is important to remain strong and resilient throughout the process.
Throughout your recovery, write down the firsts that you achieve along the way. Set yourself some small goals to work towards and acknowledge when you have achieved these.
Why Celebrating Milestones Is Important
Celebrating your achievements and recovery milestones can give you a feeling of joy, pride, accomplishment, commitment, and hopefulness. It is a way of showing yourself that positivity can lead to new, natural highs in life.
Natural highs can come from doing something new, celebrating an achievement, enjoying your latest meal out or traveling to somewhere new for example. It is important to try and find these moments in recovery, note them down and, if possible, set goals around these.
Some Celebratory Tips and Ideas
Not every achievement has to be made public and shouted about to everyone you know. You may wish to keep some of the smaller achievements to yourself, treat yourself when you have completed a new first or worked towards and through a goal you have set for yourself.
If you did want to celebrate with others, here are some tips and ideas:
- Get together and celebrate with friends and family
- Enjoy a nice dinner at home or out at your favourite restaurant
- Travel somewhere new, perhaps somewhere you have wanted to go for a while…
- Go to a theme park
- Write a journal to remember the achievements
Whatever you find brings moments of joy and new natural highs can be thrilling and aid in your recovery journey when stepping out of rehab.
