National Recovery Month 2024

Celebrating Strength, Hope, and Community

September is once again National Recovery Month. A dedicated time to raise awareness of substance addiction and mental health disorders, with a focus on celebrating the power of recovery and supporting those in their current journey to healing.

National Recovery Month Legacy

The National Recovery Month began in 1989 and it was spearheaded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (also known as SAMHSA). Since then, the movement has grown not only nationwide, but worldwide, bringing together individuals and communities to celebrate their resilience and strength during recovery.

This year, SAMHSA continues its mission of increasing public awareness also by promoting evidence-based treatment practices to empower people on their paths to recovery, and New Leaf Recovery is here to support the movement by bringing awareness to this highly important matter.

Why Recovery Month Matters?

Recovery Month is about acknowledging the struggles that people in a battle of addiction and mental health may deal with but is it also about celebrating their progress and path to wellness and recovery. This is why, every step towards recovery is a victory, and acknowledging these incredible gains is a must!

Breaking Addiction Stigma, Building Community

National Recovery Month plays a crucial role in breaking the stigma that comes associated with addiction and mental health. This is because sharing stories, participating in events, and fostering open conversations help create a sense of community and shared identity. This then empowers individuals in their path to recovery, also encouraging others to seek the help they may need.

Increasing Public Awareness

By being visible, sharing these positive stories about recovery and acknowledging the challenges individuals face, we can help increase public awareness and understanding of the matter. This understanding may also come with the support that individuals may need in order to progress with a successful recovery, advocating for more treatment options available, and discussing ways of combating stigma surrounding addiction and mental health.

Join the Movement and Find Your Way to Support

To support and join the National Recovery Month in 2024, there are a few things you can do. They include:

Share your story: Have you ever been on the recovery path? Consider sharing your story with someone you know, be the individual going through addiction recovery, mental health conditions, or not. Breaking the silence can inspire others to do the same and spread a message of hope for those in need.

Attend Events: Look for local National Recovery Month events near you and connect with others in your community.

Spread Awareness: Talk openly about addiction and mental health and National Recovery Month. Sharing important and relevant information may help others to find their path to recovery and combat stigma.

Support Causes: Consider donating to organisations that provide recovery services near you or volunteer your time.

Register for the Global Event: The International Recovery Day website offers a worldwide virtual event. Join this celebration of hope and help others in their recovery path!

By working together, we can help create a more supportive environment for those living with addiction and mental health challenges. Celebrating the strength found in recovery and inspiring others for a brighter future is essential.

Every step towards recovery counts!
